the only solution is DON'T MAXIMIZE the window. And suprise, it keeps the size of the preview pane. This solution worked for me too! I'm a bit crazy in a good sense, but very good at what I do. weblink
Microsoft keeps putting out commercials about usability in Windows 7 yet we still are forced to deal with these types of shortcomings in 2009 after all these years yet same issue For example, the view of a local hard disk and a network mapped drive are considered different types, as well as the 'My Videos' and 'My Music' folders, and folders that Closed it once more and then Re-opened and it was exactly as I wanted. Now, once Windows Explorer is open and you resize the preview pane, that will hold as long as you don't close Windows Explorer.

You have to enlarge the window manually. So the WORK AROUND is to adjust the non-maximized Explorer window to be near full screen width then maximize it.
