Delete the contents of the C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution folder Start the Windows Update Service. Scroll down and look for Windows Update Service. Ran WindowsUpdate – took 93 minutes to identify updates which included 3 “important” for Win 10 and 1 “optional” which was to download Win 10 and which was selected by default!! It did still use a bit of CPU but it wasn't the wuauserv.exe process...it was (I think) TrustedInstaller.exe and makecab.exe so at least it appeared something was happening. I didn't install any new updates in last days except Windows Defender definitions. 45 minutes and still checking for updates. So I had to use my restore point to solve this problem.
