The only difference is this laptop had 8.1 for only about two hours. I still have not moved the drive to another connector and power cable so it could be power issues as well as drive issues. Next read the logs for repeat errors, especially Performance log to see what is hanging at boot, and use the System Resources in the Troubleshooting link in my signature picture below. To the best of my knowledge I haven't installed anything prior to this happening. Will a clean install of windows 8 work even though I'm changing my motherboard? I get past the "Dell" circle startup but then it's just a blank black screen. Normal boot time for a machine like this should be around 45secs or so.

FWIW:Based on the SeaTools results...appears that your attention should be focused on the hard drive, not on Windows or any program running on Windows.
