A partial solution I found was I unplugged the laptop from the cable modem and connected the laptop to my wireless network. After closing those windows when finished. As an example it might be 192.168.1.1 Your ipv4 address might be 192.168.1.2, Other machine 192.168.1.3 etc. Using the site is easy and fun.

On the laptop, I have no problem accessing the Desktop's shared folders via the "Homegroup" sidebar button in Windows Explorer. Without the key no one can join the workgroup.
